HP just updated the Spectre line to include the HP Spectre 13 and a new collar with a touchscreen and a new quad-core processor. It’s a 13.3 inch display and now comes in a 4k option and it’s also a touch display. They’ve improved upon an already stunning design and outfitted it with an eighth generation quad-core CPU. It’s the core i5 8250 U and it’s also available in a core i7.

This unit has 8 gigabytes of RAM but you can outfit it up to 16 gigabytes. For storage 256 gigabytes of PCIE NVME SSD storage but you can go up to 1 terabyte of storage. They’ve increased the battery to a 43 watt hour battery and it comes with a 65 watt charger.

The 4k display is simply stunning. HP Spectre 13 comes in the dark silver and the all-new ceramic white. Speaking of that display it is a 13.3 inch IPS glossy touch display and it’s covered in Gorilla Glass NBT. This 4k model has a resolution of 3840 by 2160 and that’s a 16 by 9 aspect ratio. It covers the color gamut pretty well at 96 percent srgb and 75 percent Adobe RGB. The brightness is OK at 297 where it’s good for both indoor and for mostly outdoor use except in direct sunlight where it will be an issue for the most part thanks to its glossy display. It is a very sharp 4k display and blacks are very deep and colors really pop and are very vibrant.

HP Spectre 13 has a touch screen which works really well for scrolling, pinch-to-zoom and all the things you’d want to do with a touch screen. Packaging is very premium with the spectral line and this is no exception and they include a sleeve in a matching color in the box. It’s a nice touch and holding the unit for the first time you realize how thin and light this device really is. HP Spectre 13 is so gorgeous it really does feel premium.

It comes with some set up guides customer support with warranty information as well. The HP Spectre 13 also comes with a USB type a 2 type C adapter, a 65 watt adapter and it charges the device pretty fast. It took about 1 hour 15 minutes to fully charge this device. The good news is you can use any USB type-c. All the ports are located on the back of the device. It got a 3.5 mm headset jack, three USB type-c ports where two of them are Thunderbolt and the last one does data charge and display out.

On the back you get nothing but the gold trim which actually looks really nice on this model. The keyboard has 1.3 mm of key travel and is comfortable to type on. The keys got a good clicking and a good tactile feedback and it has multi level backlighting. Its trackpad uses synaptics drivers. Windows 10 just works just as advertised on the HP Spectre 13.

On top of the display is a front facing webcam and has the capacity of 720p 30 frames per second camera. It is not the greatest in low-light situations and appears to be a bit grainy. You can use it for Skype and video conferencing when you need it but a little bit disappointing in terms of why not are we not getting a full HD webcam.

There is no fingerprint sensor for Windows Hello login but you do get a Windows hello camera and it does work well. Setup is easy and pretty much works as advertised. HP moved the speakers to the top of the keyboard giving it a smaller footprint. Speaking of those speakers they’re Banging Olsen branded and they sound pretty good considering this is extremely thin and light laptop.

HP Spectre 13 is not a gaming machine please keep that in mind. You can do some gaming and the results from the 3D mark score is a fire strike. It is adviced to avoid playing any kind of triple-a gaming at least not without a dedicated GPU and this does not have one but you can connect any GPU.

For the battery you’re going to get about 4 to 5 hours that’s 40% screen brightness. Doing YouTube, Netflix, some light gaming, some photoshop and some light editing in terms of video editing you’re only gonna get about 4 to 5 hours. As far as thermals are concerned it’s an interesting mix here. If you got a 15 minute video HD streaming on YouTube the touchpad reaches about 87 degrees Fahrenheit, keyboard between the G and H keys at 86 degrees Fahrenheit, on the bottom reached a very hot 109 degrees which is way over the 95 degree comfort threshold.

It has bluetooth 4. and has no issues with pairing and as far as Wireless its 802 11 AC 80 265 dual band wireless which is really good range and reception is excellent. To bring it all home the HP spectre 13 is worth your hard-earned money.
